Critical Response to Two Articles
“Globalization: Marginalization of the poor” “A one-world market is beneficial to all”
Since few decades ago the term “globalization” has been mentioned as an ebullient issue all over the world. From the financial news on the television to academic studies teach in school and it also has become a controversial topic due to the advantages and disadvantages it brings the whole world. In his article Banques. T. K (2007), “Globalization: Marginalization of the poor”, Liberty Press, argues that globalization under the control of developed countries increases the disparity between the first and third worlds, makes the proportion of poverty goes up. On the other hand, in his article “A one-world market is beneficial to all”, World View, Noette points out opposite claims that globalization is eroding the disparity between developed and developing nations, creating the global prosperity, and disseminating wealth, power and liberal democracy throughout the world. This essay will argue that globalization despite of glowing term is considered as a more negative phenomenon in the world.
In the first point, Banques states that globalization is marginalizing the poor. Developing countries are being exploited through “the use of multinational capital and global governance”, resulting an increase of the gap between rich and poor nations. In contrast, Noette addresses that globalization has increased world prosperity and improved the welfare of citizens in the world. Beside that, it guarantees developing of nations’ share of world trade and contribute to the development of all sides for any individual country.
Both Banques and Noette have presented arguments in support of their view, however Banques seems to be more convincing by pointing out appropriate statistics about the value of share in Africa and Latin America has fallen. It proved that Noette’s claim that globalization makes the nations’ share increase is wrong. Moreover, Noette does not cite any sources to back up his claims, and fails to acknowledge that the rapid dissemination of globalization has led many troubles to small countries and make them become more vulnerable.
At the second point, Noette says that globalization has brought about huge benefit as can be defined as “the diffusion of prosperity, wealth and power, resulting in modernization and development”. For example, the economic in Eastern Asia has merged as a young, progressive and potential market. Additionally, the major multinational companies or international institutions such as the IMF, The World Bank and the G7 are doing really a great job in restructuring developing countries into a better organization which will be more flexible to deal with world political, economic and social problems. Nonetheless, Banques blames the crisis happened in Asia was a directly result of globalization which spread rapidly and seriously effected on the economic zone. Banques also believes that the interference of The World Bank and IMF has slowdown the development and coerce the countries’ growth by compellable strategies. In this argument, Noette’s claim is not supported with any concrete evidence and too general while Banques are successful in adding the facts that happen seriously in over the world.
In conclusion, Banques and Noette have different perspectives about the spread of globalization and its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Banques argues that globalization is not the solution for world poverty and hunger however Noette strongly believes that globalization has brought plenty of benefits to the world and all the citizens. Yet, Noette fails to convince the reader as his claims are not supported by any supporting documentation. Like a coin, every thing has two sides but it seems that globalization is ruining the world; from the economy field to the connection between people.
